Re: BAD experience - and negative - for "saltcityseller
I did ask before I bid and the answer was " I removed the dirt, stain and rust
by lite buffing without removing any of the glass. There are no facets. David" the marble was one that looked like the flintstones ground it , it was last not as big as he stated . so yes I did ask about the condition before I bid because of how many of his marbles were polished / buffed . I think he must do this his self on a bench grinder first and then puts a shine to them . and yes I did get negative back . Mike

Re: BAD experience - and negative - for "saltcityseller
BigJohn, I did ask for more info, specifically about the damage and what the core looked like, but I didn't ask for nor did I receive more pics. I took the gent at his word that it had little damage - "It has one sparkler. I think next to mint." Jelly cores in near mint shape I deem highly collectible, and this one would have been a beaut - if he hadn't ground it flat as a table, with facets. I don't expect someone to misrepresent something that blatantly. He also stated on his listing "money back," which turned out to be SOME money back, not a full refund. Live and learn. And good on ya, mate, for giving a full refund, that's how it should work!
And Duff, stick to your guns on your feedback policy - if the buyer pays on time with good funds, what else should he/she have to do to get a positive?? Leaving a positive feedback for the seller should not be a prerequisite for getting a positive feedback as a buyer. That leaves good buyers hostages to bad sellers, jst as much as the other system leaves good sellers open to bad buyers. If we all shoot straight, the system will sort out the bad apples over time - IMHO anyway. OK, off my soapbox.
And Duff, it only feels like I've been here for all 85 years It'll be 24 years this October, God willing and the creek don't rise...

I got the obligatory negative from "saltcityseller"
Just wanted to update you on this fine, upstanding marble community citizen. His parting shot was to leave a negative feedback for me - my first one, as expected -the verbiage as follows:
"Returned his money. He does not know a good marble from a bad one. Too bad."
While he did have a couple of kernels of truth there 1) Partial truth #1 - He returned some of my money, not all, 2) I think I have a pretty good idea that most marbles, even handmades, should by and large be round, not flat enough to rest comfortably on a tilted table or have facets in places other than the pontils, and 3) he's right on about this - it's too bad that others, especially newbies and other unlucky souls, will continue to fall prey to unscrupulous sellers like this gent who misrepresent their product and then don't get caught.
That's the real problem with ebay - too many penny-ante pickpockets in the back alleys, plying their trade below the level of the high-end fraud radar. It's death by a thousand cuts; every time I wade into the ebay pool I'm reminded that there are indeed piranhas in the water if you don't stick close to the familiar places. Hunting for bargains can jump up and bite you in more ways than one.
Maybe I'm dreaming - have we ever compiled a "solid gold" list of rock-solid ebay marble sellers before, or is that too controversial a topic to go near??

Re: I got the obligatory negative from "saltcityseller&
Every now and then I check on the seller who gave me retaliation just to see if she's still around. I found her today. She has 64 negatives now. The system doesn't work. Good thing I ate the marbles. Probably wouldn't have gotten my money back either. Edna

The system doesn't work.
Amen to that, Edna - bad sellers keep getting away with petty theft day after day. Occasionally ebay makes a big bust, but none of us is likely to be buying a Rembrandt anytime soon. And ebay's warranty protection takes out $25, if you can get reimbursed, which is more than a lot of marbles cost in the first place or at least a large hunk. So again, the penny-ante sheisters work the old three-card monte on the internet street corner that is ebay, and we all bleed from the pocketbook. Sad but true.
That's why I wish we did have a rock solid, gold standard list of sellers. I know I can trust a select few - people I know from shows, primarily, or have managed to stumble on and gotten lucky. Rather than a negative list I'd love to see someone in the marble community develop a version of "Angie's List" (a screening service for home contractors) that you can buy from with TOTAL confidence that you're getting the real deal, 100% of the time. No smoke, no mirrors, and if an honest mistake should occur you get your money - all of it - back. OK, I'm dreaming, I know - I'll drive home now and play John Lennon's "Imagine," while trying to block out Natalie Merchant's much more realistic "Motherland." If you haven't heard it, grab a copy of the song. Welcome to modern America - "The lust and the avarice, the bottomless, the cavernous greed, is that what you see?"
Have a good one -

I've been thinking about your gold standard list since I read your first post on it. Seems like a good idea, just not sure how to implement it. Since people have varying experiences with sellers, just having people post their opinions could open up a big can of waorms. Perhaps something like a numerical feedback system that eBay uses would be most appropriate. People could e-mail me names of exceptional sellers and I could keep a running tally of the number of times a person is mentioned. Therefore, someone named 12 times might have a better reputation than someone only mentioned by seven people. Of course, we could also throw negs in there too and have the complete system in place.
Just a thought, let me know if anyone has any other ideas.

Gold Standard List
Elizabeth, you may be on to something there. Let's not air it in public, let's not trample any feelings by intent or accident, that's not what this should be about. Why don't you put it out on a separate thread and ask for some recommendations? Buyers can rate their absolute favorites. Maybe do an opinion poll whether it should just be a five star list only - my preference - or include some four-star, usually reliable sources. I think the gold standard for a seller is someone who never stretches the truth about a marble - if it's got a big ding, it's a big ding, it isn't mint. NM+ maybe, OK. A moon and a scatch? Call'em like you sees'em. Tell me how you viewed the marble - loupe? Naked eye? Telescope? Rose-colored glasses? Through your overdue bill pile? And state your FULL return policy - if you say "REFUND" mean it - don't give back what you feel like coughing up.
I don't know - like I said maybe I'm dreaming, but there has to be a way that those of us who buy on the 'bay can better protect ourselves. We've got an awful lot of stored up knowledge, we just need to share it. Maybe throw a poll out there and see if anybody wants to join in? I hope so - thanks for listening and chiming in!!

I figured the office of the President of eBay should get the motor running pretty efficently dont cha think.?? It works honestly and if they cant solve your issue then mark the seller as horrible and mention to us your buddies , dont buy there. and a whopping thanks to ya.
Best of wishes to all troubled on these issues of horrid sellers on the bay.
